James Beard Award-winning Chef Tyson Cole, one of the few American sushi masters on the planet, has announced he will open the eighth location of his splashy, upscale Uchi restaurant in tony Newport Beach next year.

His thriving West Hollywood location has been buzzing in the culinary world since December 2023, but he has had his sites set on the O.C. since arriving in Southern California.

"We are excited to be expanding in Southern California and I love the vibrant fine dining scene in Orange County,“ Cole said. "Securing a highly visible spot in the center of the county’s Gold Coast region is very difficult, and we are excited to be able to partner with a local developer who has spent several years entitling and permitting a unique spot for our new restaurant. Newport Beach is a dream destination for Uchi, and we're incredibly honored to bring our unique culinary experience to this remarkable community."

The word Uchi is Japanese for "house," which is exactly where Cole opened his first location — in a refurbished bungalow in Austin, after spending years learning the delicate craft of sushi and sashimi, makimono, yakimono, tempura, and a changing omakase that is dependent on local farmers markets.

Uchi Newport Beach will be a cornerstone location in Hai Hospitality's ever-expanding portfolio. After opening in Austin in 2003, his signature sushi dishes led to Uchi locations in Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami, West Hollywood, Scottsdale and Charlotte. Uchi Newport Beach will be located at 2510 West Coast Highway and is expected to open its doors in 2026.
